It wasn’t exactly love at first sight for 19 year old Isaac Ang and graphic design. In fact, his first year in Singapore Polytechnic’s Visual Communications course was a rather bumpy one. But going through the preparatory semester of ‘Common Foundation’ where he learnt skills from every design course, he gradually improved, culminating in a turning point in Year 2.
“My logo design for an official client was shortlisted as one of the top 10 in a competition.” Although he didn’t win, it spurred his interest in design by leaps and bounds. “Acknowledgment is very important in this industry. Once you taste it, you want to fight harder for it.”
When asked to describe his work, Isaac instantly mentions the vibrancy of colours, pop art and how he likes to inject his own personality into his work. He is inspired by artists such as Yusuke Nakamura, Olly Moss, Johnny Cupcakes and Ricky Linn. However, among the big names he cites as his influences, it is interesting to note that he also is motivated by his hardworking classmates.
“ Down-to-earth individuals who made it through their own ability - these people really inspire me to
push myself. ”
Isaac is currently working on his final year project, an advertisement design with his client of choice, Tokyobike. He is also honing his skills under the Noise Apprenticeship program. He dreams of future collaboration with the likes of Yusuke Nakamura, Asian Kung Fu Generation and Urban Outfitters. But for now, he says, “Honestly I would love to collaborate with some of my classmates, they motivate me too.”
